I'm in the Bournemouth/Christchurch area and really want to stretch to a freehold property but have 150K max. I keep seeing houses on the 'ever so popular under 35's development'. What's all this about? Surely if you own the freehold thay can't make you move on once you hit 35?? ... Anyway good luck to them cos not many under 35 years old sin this area can afford those prices!

Certainly seems like an odd way to market property, but I guess it's trying to appeal to that age group - given that the number of people under 35 and owning their own home is falling.
I wouldn't imagine that it's an age limit...more a weird euphemism for housing for young professionals, in a similar vein to 'excellent family home' or 'good first time buy'.0 -
I live in christchurch and mr divadees best friend lived in new milton until last month and none of us has never heard of this.
And like you say there are not many people that can afford a house round here at 35!!!0 -
Perhaps it's marketing-speak for a 17 year lease?0

there is one development in London for under 35s. they call it docklands."enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0

I am moving to the area too and have looked at several of them ... must admit when I was trawling through rightmove it was nice to find some that didn't say "retirement only"
... at least 50% of them were for age 60+. I didn't go for them as many of them seemed to be stuck on rightmove for months and also when I looked at them the houses were weeny and they suffered from the typical lack of parking that comes with built up estates
Not sure what they do once you hit 35 ... where are you supposed to go till you retire and can then have your pick of property in the area???:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:Mortgage Total: £52,063 / £75,000
Mortgage Overpayments Pot £5340 -
also meant to say hello to divadee and fimonkey .... nice to "meet" some of my new neighbours !!:D :hello:Mortgage Total: £52,063 / £75,000

My OH sells property in a developement designed for the over 55 year olds and, beleive me, if you offered double the asking price and were 50 years old you would NOT get a look in.
Many developements are sold with restrictions such as what colour you paint your house - FREEHOLD or not!.
The idea of an under 35 development is feasable. How practical is another question. I would imagine loads of parties, drink, drugs, irresponsibility in general, fights and damage to the surroundings. A bit of a ghetto would develop, in my view.
This is not an ageist or an anti-youth/young view. Just how I imagine the site ten years hence. The result of the young having fun."Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0 -
while i can see the point in age restrictions for retirement places i doubt many under 35s give a monkeys how old their neighbors are, if your old you want to exclude disruptive elements, young and what do you care, you only want to stop the police turning up for loud parties etc and even then its a minor concern since unless you are having constant parties 24/7 its dubious they would care and any young person who can buy a house and party 24/7 isnt likely to be stoped by any housing contract.0

I'd bet that the over-40s have more Marshall 200w stacks than the under-40s...0

Well I shall investigate further as these are generally the only freeholds that are coming up within my price range. I'll endevour to post the answer here when I find out!0
