hi guys,
can anyone give me some advice, i live in a property which is 11years old, lived here for 6years, it has artex on the ceiling all over the house, which i hate and don't have the finance to get it removed.
I started to paint the ceiling with brilliant white matt emulsion paint in one of the bedrooms which is next to the bathroom, but the paint quickly started to flake off..
do i need to seal/prime the ceiling before painting.
any advise is appreciated

did the ceiling already have a matt paint on it or was it glossy? did you wipe down the surface before you painted it?
I would suggest wiping the ceiling using sugar soap (and get as much of the flaky paint off) then re paint0 -
yes, looking at it, its not shiny so i am presuming it was matt,
i dusted off the ceiling first with the hoover then wiped with a light damp cloth.
the ceiling hasn't been painted since initial painting, as there are no other layers,
i have taken off as much flaking paint as i could, will try sugar soap,
cheers

We had a similar problem, I put on a coat of Johnstone's Ultra primer sealer which has stopped the flaking when we repainted with matt emulsion.

You don't necessarily have to have the artex removed, as it can be plastered over. I've had this done in one of my rooms and hopefully will eventually have it done in the rest.
I'm not sure what my excuse is for having all my ceilings artexed though - I paid for it to be done myself when I moved in
In my defence, it was in 1994 and seemed like a good idea at the time13 stone down, 3 more to go0 -
A tip our decorator gave us was to mist the first coat i.e. well watered down coat of emulsion first, then go over with a normal coat. Worked a treat on our ceiling.£2 Savers Club 2016 #21 £14/£250
