home insurance / renewal vs new quote

Hello all
have had renewal quote from direct line for building and contents insurance (also includes travel insurance and emergency cover).
last year (first year of owning home) we paid £610, renewal quote was for £830.
I called back and they adjusted back down to £630.
If I apply as a new customer, the price is £500.
Can I just cancel my current insurance at end of term, and get my wife to take it out from the following day as a new customer?

Normally you can just take it out yourself for the £500 without having to mess about putting it in your wifes name or if you phone them and tell them what the new business price is they will price match themselves on your old policy thus avoiding the potential additional checks if you made a claim in the first few weeks of the policy etc0
