Have you got the schools admission criteria? Did you get a booklet from the LEA with the application form in? It should be in there under the school.

    hi,

    thanks for the replay.

    here is the critera.

    1. Children having a sibling attending the school at the date of admission and living within the area served by the school at the closing date for application and also at the time of the child’s admission to school
    2. Children living within the area served by the school at the closing date for application
and also at the time of the child’s admission to school
    3. Children living outside the area served by the school and having a sibling attending the school at the proposed date of admission
    4. Children on the roll of Nursery for 5 sessions per week prior to the closing date
    5. Children who have strong medical or social grounds for admission. These reasons must be fully supported in writing from a professional person, such as a doctor or social worker, and returned with the application form. (Examples of strong compelling medical or social grounds could be serious domestic or family problems or the child having a chronic medical condition).
    6. proximity of the applicant’s home to the school, to those living nearest distance using distance system.

Should there be too many applicants in a particular criteria the Governing Body will take the remaining criteria in ascending order
For example, if there are too many applicants in criteria 5, the Governing Body will take into consideration the following criteria in order
    •those on the roll of Nursery for 5 sessions per week prior to the closing date;
•those who have strong medical or social grounds for admission
•proximity of applicant’s home to school

cleary we come under point 2( catchment), but will lose out becouse child doesn't go to the attached nursary.

    thanks

I am beginning an appeal to get my daughter into a local school. It is the nearest school but NOT our catchment school. My youngest has a place for sept 10 and we want to move our other daughter who is currently in yr3. We were refused as the class already has 30 children in the class. She is 2nd on the waiting list. Any ideas to help me write a strong case.

    thanks

    Hi,

I just wanted to thank everyone for there help.

Unfortunatley we were unsucessful with our appeal on friday, it looked very good at one stage with the panel stating the school has 2 spare classrooms.
They also wanted to know why the PAN had been dropped from 45 to 30.
However it didn't go our way 9 appeals and no one was succesful.

We have managed to get a place at an RC school 4 miles away though, so its not all doom and gloom.

It's not quie clear but are you appealing for the Year 3 child? If so, I believe that once children are in KS2 class sizes are allowed to be over 30 so there would be a better chance for you at appeal. If it is for the youngest who is younger than Year 3 then things might be different as schools need to stick to PANs.

I am going to read and run as I have to go to work, but will get back to you later on this if no-one else has - are you definitely in the catchment / boundary area of that school? In our school, even one side of a street can make a difference.

Hi, Yes we are definitely in the catchment area and I have confirmed this with the school, we are halfway( .5miles) between the school and the boundary and on the same side of the school. So far I have not heard anything form the school even though I have requested for appeal application mid April.
    Thanks..

Hi - just heard son is not getting to preferred school and looking to appeal.

His catchment school is not good - reports on the education is dreadful and do not want him attending there as the other school is so much better.

For the appeal what can I say?

We have thought of safety as to get to his catchment school he would have to cross a busy road at a roundabout with a 40 mph speed limit. There is no pathway to the nearest crossing and the next crossing which is a bridge is almost at the door of our preferred school. The other school has a safer route in our opinion.

Can I mention the education level? I know I cannot mention life balance \ child care after school as this will not be accepted as a reason (they have stated that in their letter).

Can I also mention facilities at the school? Preferred school has a breakfast club (catchment school doesnt).

Any help would be greatly appreciated (worried sick about all this!)

    Thanks, Donna

I cannot help with the appeal, hopefully someone else on here can advise on that. However I would say that if you don't want him to go to the catchment school then it may be worth looking around at other local schools, I have heard of so many people failing at appeal that it is wise to have a back up plan. Have you looked around at your catchment school? Are you going by Ofsted?

Is this what they have applied to your situation? i.e there were too many children in section 2 and so they gave priority to those who attend the nursery for 5 sessions per week?
