Orange Roaming Charges

So, got back from a short weekend break and got hit by £40 (plusVAT) of data charges from Orange. Quite a shock as I had used it to check google maps once. Apparently it's due to Apps running in the background, fair enough. I don't assume Orange should have told me these things when I got my iPhone, although that would have been nice.
My issue? The fact that they have a policy to help travellers out by warning via text that you've used 8mb and again at 16 mb. This did not happen, so I had no idea so much data was being used.
To add insult to injury, the EU have decided these kinds of charges are way to high, so will be introducing a cap of 59p per Mb in June.
I sent a message to bill queries and just got a 'yep, well you should have asked about packages beforehand' reply.
BYE ORANGE
Anyone know of anything else I can do?

Do you have the right package for the phone ?
You get an app that closes any apps that are running.
Did you go abroad ? as you can get a bundle added onto your contract.
You get a fish and slap your face with it.0 -

If they advertise the fact that they will tell you when you've used certain amounts of data and you exceeded these without warning, tell them (don't ask) to remove the amount over and above that at which the first warning should have been issued. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

I was using Free Wifi at the Hotel. I only used my phone once or twice to check google Maps as we were a bit lost in Amsterdam and the trams were very confusing!0 -
Make sure that none of your Apps are set to update automatically - this can make a major difference as you will find they download new versions in the background whenever they find a 3G service to use. Set them all to manual update, that way it asks before doing it and you can do updates when connected via Wi-Fi and thus not incurr data charges. Some of the updates can be huge - especially Google Maps!!0

I agree with Azari, if it's anywhere in your contract or the published policies of Orange that they will provide you with notifications when you have used a set amount of data, then call them, state that you did not receive the notification (and that if you had you would have turned it off and not used further data) and that you expect any usage above the level for the first notification to be refunded.
I haven't dealt with orange customer service in a long time, but I've had similar things happen with T-Mobile and they've credited my account without any hassle (since Orange and T-mobile have the same owner you'd hope they act similarly).Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0
