Transit vans have their batteries under the drivers seat.

I remember in days gone by, original Minis had their battery in the boot ... and the mini estate had the battery under the rear seat.

I don't recall many of these vehicles exploding

And so do some Volvos etc. Sealed L.A.B's should recombine the gas back into solution and not relief vent, even very old non sealed L.A.B shouldn't gas much unless severely overcharged. My point only being is we don't know what sort or state his spare battery is or if he is keeping it in a trunk in the back of a van. Still best not to shove a lot of current into all day then open the lid later with a fag in your mouth eh? elf & safety an all that, especially on submarines ;)

If the van had a bulkhead where will you run the wires? If you can do that then why not just run the wires directly from the battery?

Only 1 wire from the battery required for the split charge relay and an earth point.

Having a bulkhead is one thing but how will you secure the battery from sliding around the rear?

    It needs bolting in.

I think your just thinking of the hardest solution possible when taking a flask is so much easier.

What will the company say when your battery leaks and strips the paint and starts eating away at the metal?

I had a battery leak in the garden, On a conrete paving slap, The slabs surface crumbled away.
