Cracked hob - contents insurance.

My wife dropped a knife on our electric hob and it's cracked across one of the rings.

I have checked my insurance docs and I have accidental cover with £75 excess.

A new hob seems to be at least £550 (it's an 80cm one).

Seems like a no brainer that I should claim, but is it like car insurance where I end up paying more than that back through increased premiums?

Cheers,

Yes, your premiums will increase if you make a claim.

Have you checked out prices for a replacement on the internet? Only when I had a new kitchen fitted, I managed to get a brand spanking new quality top branded hob from Ebay from a seller who had bought it & never fitted it. I acquired my branded sink the same way, both were at a fraction of the shop prices. So it's always worth checking out what is on offer as sometimes there are some gems out there waiting to be nabbed.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

    My premiums are only £17.62

Here's some example prices online for what I need.

Will have a check on ebay.

I mean will my premium go up a couple of quid? If so then that's no problem at all. If we're talking an extra £20 a month then I'll sort it myself!

Edit: Cheapest on ebay is £399 for an ex-display.

I can't imagine it would go up hugely but what about trying to do a new quote to reflect your claim and see what the premium is? Also doesn't a ceramic hob come under your buildings rather than your contents insurance?

I've just done some quotes on gocompare and it seems I'm already paying £80 a year over the odds. Guess I could claw back any increase by switching.

It will go up by very little, if anything. It doesn't work like car insurance.

What is the point in paying an additional premium for Accidental damage if you're not going to claim on it when you have an accident? You may as well not have had it.

And Becs is right - it comes off your buildings insurance, not your contents. If it was a free standing cooker it would be your contents, but as its built in then it comes off your buildings insurance.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
