Moving costs: Am I missing anything?

Hi guys,

I just wanted to get straight in my mind all the things you have to pay for when you move house. Can anyone think of anything I've missed off?

Stamp Duty
Estate Agent's Fees
Solicitor's Fees
Removal People
New mortgage fees
Survey on new home
Homebuyers pack - if we sell after June
Building and contents insurance for new home

I've never moved before, could someone also give me an estimate of how much removals will be for a 3-bed terraced home, if we're only moving 5 miles?

Thanks a lot.

Happy friday, everyone.

It cost me £1,200 to move all of two miles, but that included storage. I would suggest you are looking @ circa £500. Best to get a local removal companies to give you a quote. Do not even think of DIY.

I moved 2 miles, 2 years ago for £200. I would expect to pay a little more though.

    missile - Why not DIY?

We are planning to DIY, hiring a 7.5ton, two dads, loads of mates with pizza and beer at the end of it all!

We DIY last time as well with just a normal transit van, took a few trips that time.

By the time you hire a 7.5 tonne and buy pizza and beer you've probably spent the best part of £150-£200.

I'm moving from 1 bed flat in london, going about 20 miles and been quoted £300!! You have to shop around tho, i was quoted £1200 by some scallys!

DIY sounds fun but usually takes 48hrs to recover and if you get an injury you cant paint and decorate when you get in (o:

But you miss out on the fun. I dont see how people find moving stressful, maybe as i've done it so many times its more natural to me.

I love getting a few mates over to give us a hand, chill with a few beers after and sort a few basics out, like sofa and TV.

Miss out on the fun, you must be joking - it's much more fun watching people work for you and carry all the heavy things (o:

Seriously tho, what if your mate Dave drops your £2000 LCD? I bet he's not going to have insurance.

Fun having mates round is great, just tell them to come round after you've moved and have a house warming party.

We moved in December and removal company quotes ranged from £600 to £1300!!!
Needless to say we chose the £600 one and they were fab!!!
Be careful as some companies lump on costs if you are delayed getting the keys and will charge you extra per hour etc.
We didn't get our keys til 3.30pm thru no fault of our own,we were 5th in the chain and had to wait for every one else sols to exchange monies, and our removal men were still unloading at 6pm.They didn't charge us extra and so we tipped them well!!!
What about funds for increase in life assurance cost, increase in council tax and increase in bills, all of ours went up by quite alot moving from a 3 bed house to a 4 bed.

Don't forget when you move you'll need a DIY fund for emergency repairs, things like changing the locks just cost us nearly £100!!!
Redirection of mail about £25,moving Sky £40,new curtains when all your old ones don't fit and the owners don't leave you any!!!
    Hope some of that helps

Some of your list are not essential. EAs are optional and conveyancers are cheaper than solicitors.

Don't forget curtains, carpets and more importantly, is there a BT line or whatever you need for your broadband connection?
