Applied for DLA. What happens next, am I likely to get it?

Thought I'd post it in this forum incase the other one was not suitable

I just applied for Disabled living allowance. Does anyone know how they will contact me, and how long that normally takes?

I suffered a broken skull a year ago which was at first misdiagnosed (St John paramedic sent me to walk home with it, and I slept at home that night with a fractured skull) but diagnosed when I went into hospital the next day. Since then have had problems with both physical and mental, such as a constant dull headache, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, difficulty sleeping, low quality sleep, sucidial feelings, etc..

But filling out the form, I was struck that it didn't really seem appropriate for me.. I don't need much help, I live alone and although I live a very low quality life, I get by..

I am a student and am going to apply for a Disabled Student's Allowance also.

At the moment, apart from my student loan, I do not have any other income whatsoever. Is there anything I could claim to help me get by?

Thanks in advance

Being a student normally means that you are expected to be able to live on student loan, topping up with any part time work if you wish.

I cant remember how long it takes to process DLA so sorry but i cant comment on that bit. If you are awarded DLA, as a disabled student, you may be entitlted to some benefits.

Also DLA does not really go off any kind of diagnosis, it goes off your care and mobility needs, so the questions are more geered towards these.

No-one here can say whether you will definately get DLA. However, if you feel that nothing on the form applied to you, then that may be because you do not have to care and/or mobility needs to qualify.

The first time I applied, I heard within a couple of weeks that I had been turned down. I reapplied with much more info, and evidence, and waited about 8 weeks to hear - on that occasion my application was granted. If the Decision Maker needs further info you might be required to undergo a 'medical'.

I went through College & University while claiming DLA, although i was already claiming it before i started the courses. I was also granted DSA on top which was nice as i didn't realise for the first two years that it existed.. I believe new DLA claims have to be strongly supported by confirmation of your conditions by your GP. Obviously you can't just show up at your GP and say i have this, this and this, gimme a sick note so i can get DLA. You need to go to your GP on a weekly basis and let him know that the conditions you are experiencing are persistent, otherwise i doubt you'll be taken seriously. You could also demand a second opinion from a specialist in order to support your claims..

Op. They can be quite quick if they can rejject the claim at face value. Otherwise you can expect to wait up to 3 months or even more. They may seek further evidence like issuing a request for GP or specialist involved in your treatment/care to complete a factual report. I would say it is difficult to get DLA without medical verification. The form... hmmm.. hopefully you completed it well.. there's good advice out there... and if compelting in relation to MH problems I'd definitely advise before completing it by self to study a couple fo guides so you know how to phrase your problems and indeed identify what problems are relevant.

Remember just because you don't have anyone caring for you, and yu get by, doesn't mean the form doesn't apply to you, as it is based on your care needs whether OR NOT you receive thos care needs.

So, if you really struggle getting washed and you would need/benefit from help, even if no one helps you, you can still be awarded.

Did you get any help filling in the form?
