What's wrong? Lost your sense of humour?

Anyways, you'll excuse while I go watch Eastenders. There's a brilliant story line aimed at convincing us that Bianca's brood are close to starvation. Anyone mind calculating the benefits her character would be on? She doesn't appear to be spending them on her wardrobe so heaven's knows why the kids have nothing to eat. Still, that's the beeb for you. Yep, I don't hold out much hope for my quiz show idea ever being screened on that channel... :)

Gosh that's funny, only last night I said to my husband as a single Mum with 3 kids Bianca would be entitled to a fair whack in tax credits, yet she always seems to be skint!! Plus with 2 other adults in the house (Carol and Whitney!) they should be able to feed the children!

Nonsense, you live in such a house, earning a small fortune and you live up to that lifestyle. You run an expensive house (heating, water, council tax, buildings insurance, contents insurance...) and have expensive cars, tastes in food and the like. No way would you manage on £60 odd a week.

Sorry, but I have no idea where you get your ideas from.

So using your argument, if I was to tell you that say between 1989 and 1996 my salary (my wife has never worked in her life), was net per month was £5633 (£67600 pa) then I could not, years later now manage to live on the equivalent of what I would get on a means tested benefit?

It is quite easy if your outgoings are simply what it costs to live per month (ie no mortgage etc).

Yes I used to have a lifestyle then to match my income. Think nothing of having a meal out in 1990 that cost £150, never staying in a hotel that was less than 5*, owning and running three cars - a 4x4 just for the two black labs, a new BMW Coupe and an MG just for use in the summer months, children in private education etc.

But cutting your spending habits to match your income was easy!
  • Yes it does sound correct. You have a household income of £23k which excludes you from pretty much all means tested benefits except child benefit and child tax credits.

    £120k payoff guarantees it.

£23k is a lot more than many many millions of people in this country have to live on which is why you're getting the responses you are.

The fact you have mortgages to pay is irrelevant, especially as you have payment protection.

The govt expects you to live off the £120k severance package you got which is, after all, why you were paid it.

Severance pay may have an element of future income, but the vast majority of it relates to compensation for breach of contract.

If an employer terminates a contract before it is due to end, you are able to claim for the loss of your rights under that contract.

Much the same way as compensation for injuries, both civil and criminal, part of the package is for loss of future income, but the bulk of the payment is compenation for trauma & damages, both physical and mental.

You cannot say that they are paid 100% for future loss of income.

Isn't Bianca a "victim" of snowballing payday loans for plasma tellies et al? I thought the storyline was having a dig at loan sharks, not the paucity of the benefits system.

sour? good lord!:rotfl: you've had a cushy ride, now it's time to pay your own way in your new relationship, how bout YOU pay for your kids by getting a better paid job so the new squeeze doesn't have to? and when I say YOU, I mean you as in you, not benefits
When your life is a mess, stop and think what you are doing before bringing more kids into it, it's not fair on them.

Long time user, but new ID for this post.

History: Was made redundant from a role that paid me in excess of £50K pa and am now on JSA.

Current position: Married with Children (currently at school). During the good times we were smart enough to save a bit of money. With my leaving package we now have, between cash and shares, ~ £120K. We own four properties; our home, a holiday home that we use and do not let out, two other houses which are let out. My Wife is self employed and before expences her business brings in ~ £12Kpa. All our let properties, holiday home, savings and shares are in her name as she was the lower rate tax payer. Our childrens savings are also in her name. Our holiday home is owned outright, whereas the our home and other two properties have mortgages on them.

Current Income: Wife self employment £12K pa, House Rent £11K pa, interest from savings. I have JSA and also have a claim going through for mortgage protection (privately held insurance policy)

Just ran all our details through the benefits checker and the only additional benefit we would receive to what we get now (Child Benefit) would be Childrens tax Credit.

I was expecting help with our Council Tax at least!!

    Does that sound correct?

One avenue I could go down to to use our savings to as much of our mortgage off as possible, but it doesn't look as if that would increase the amount of benefits we could claim due to property owned.
Well, you could plough your wife's entire salary into a pension scheme. That would reduce your income for tax credits purposes and on your remaining income of £11k you'd get a lot more in CTC plus WTC as well. Try the entitledto calculator.
