XBox 360 "open tray" issue/not reading discs

Hi all,
I'm feeling a bit sheepish after buying a 60GB XBox 360 at a car boot for £45 and having been assured by the seller it didn't have red ring of death found the CD drive was broke...(didn't think about that!). It came with Gears of War 1 & 2, wireless controller, all cables inc HDMI and works fine otherwise including on XBox Live. Just that when you put any disc in it might say 'reading' briefly and that's it.
Determined to make light of a bad situation I dismantled it and tried cleaning the laser to no avail. It makes a bit of a weird noise when it tries to read the disc. I rang around a few local places and it seems the prices are around £25 for a new laser or £20 for a drive you fit yourself or £35 to have one fitted etc.
Fearing adding on lots of extra costs to what seemed like a bargain at the time, can anyone help or advise who has done this kind of thing?
I was hoping to maybe get the part(s) and fix it myself.
The drive is a DG-16D2S by the way.

The drive is signed to the 360 itself (linked) so it's not just a case of replaceing the DVD enclosure unfortunately. It will require 'some' hacking, spoofing of the drive etc.
Without the proper tools the extra £15 for fitting is by far the best option.
It may or may not be safe for live use afterwards though (you'd best check that with the seller/installer of the drive).0 -
I might have sort it (really hope so). There are some Youtube vids where people tend to suggest turning a little screw at the back of the laser and I tried this and it's now reading and playing a game
With any luck, a simple little trick like that might have save me a fair bit of money. I was a bit scared to risk it but it seems hopefully to be ok at the moment... fingers crossed... 0
