I registered just for this thread because the amount of snobbery made me so angry!
Clearly there are a lot of people commenting who have never lived in Splott. Having lived there for a few years now, I see more and more families and working professionals moving in every month.
Zero trouble experienced, unlike the city center. Although if you get nervous around people who don't look like you, then you may be more comfortable in a rabbit warren bay flat where you never see your neighbours.
..and whoever referenced cafe culture - get a life! It's Cardiff butty.0 -

I don't really see how people giving their opinions on places to live is snobbery. You obviously like living in Splott, and if you have not experienced any trouble that is great, but it is still ranked 25th out of 29 districts in Cardiff for crime so maybe you have just been lucky.
The point of the thread was to advise someone who is not from Cardiff what part of the city she should look at living in. While you are obviously happy where you are, can you honestly say that out of all the areas of Cardiff, Splott is the one place you would actually recommend??
The fact is that Splott has a bad reputation, there are no good pubs, restaurants or shops and house prices are low for a reason. Other than the fact it is cheap, I can't think of a single reason why anyone would want to live there. The point people on this thread are making is, if you can afford to live elsewhere, do so, because there are better options.0 -
Shirley Bassey is from Splott, not Tiger Bay that was because it sounded betterDo I need it or just want it.0

There is in fact one really good restaurant in the Splott area: Canteen on Clifton Street http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g186460-d1399993-Reviews-Canteen_on_Clifton_Street-Cardiff_Southern_Wales_Wales.html
Can't comment on pubs as I don't go to any.
Town centre is only 15 min walk from where I live.
While it may not be the best place in Cardiff. There are certainly worse places to live than Splott0 -
You have good and bad where ever you go
I was born Just off Clifton street, all my family lived In Splott and Just off broadway
I moved out when I was 12,I now live In ELY !!!
I have never has any trouble here
If I won the lottery I wouldn't move out of here
Yes there are certain places that are not nice to live In but you will find that In most places now
Like what was said earlier, drive around at different times of the day and night
Im sure there was a web site you could go on that told you of all the break-ins,trouble and the amount of times police were called to that area, might be worth googling ItJan 2020 Kitten cross stitching0 -
Reviving this thread as I am looking to buy in Splott - can someone please pm the streets to avoid? I am currently looking at Aberdovey Street?
Also, any opinions on Grangetown and Riverside would be greatly appreciated.
As you can guess, we don't have a huge budget so roath, canton, pontcanna etc..... are all out of my price range.0 -
I live in Grangetown and love it. I live in the north part of it, and have done for over 10 years. I can walk into the city centre and the local community is wonderful. I know so many people in this area, we really will talk to anyone :-). We get a rough ride, and yes we are not posh or crime free, but it's inner city so what do you expect.0

stay away from deprived chav filled areas like canton, splott, tremorfa, st mellons, ely, trowbridge, cathays, grangetown, butetown etc
breeding ground for lower class chav scum0 -
I've lived on Clifton Street for four years now and want to move to somewhere nicer. There are some lovely people in the area but I've noticed over the years so much more 'attitude' around here.
On the whole I find the area really quite unfriendly! In my opinion too many tend to keep to their own cliques and don't mix well enough.0 -
Avoid Canton, Splott, ely, go for Llandaff, Rhewbina, Roath areas much nicer.0
