No WTC, would we get childcare help?

We just got our updated child tax credit award for this year, it has gone from £113 pw to £40. We don't get WTC

My partner earns £32,500, we have 3 children. Our youngest is 1 year old, so I am looking for work.
We have no family close by so she would have to go a private nursery if I managed to find a job. Would we get any help towards childcare or is it only if you get WTC?

I'm trying to find a job in the evenings and weekends, but we live in a small rural town, with not many employment opportunities.

Thanks x

When you say you don't get WTC, it sounds like you mean you are entitled to it and it is on your award notice, but your partner's income means it is reduced to Nil.

If you start work, obviously your income will be higher. It will depend on the amount of the childcare costs as to whether you will get anything.

However, you may get more child tax credit by including childcare costs even if you don't get any of the WTC childcare element due to the level of your income.

Remember you will need to work at least 16 hours to qualify for childcare help.

  • I don't receive WTC as I earn too much, but DO receive the childcare element

Thanks. It's has in the award the working out for WTC, it's £4662.84 then underneath it says nil due to income. So I wasnt sure if I worked 16 hrs if we would get any help with the childcare, or you have to actually be getting the WtC .

Depending on income, you might well be entitled.

This is a case of bad wording - on the part of HMRC and others, as IceQueen hinted at in her post.

If you work the requisite number of hours, you're *entitled* to WTC. However, if you earn too much, your entitlement may be nil.

Some people are entitled to CTC but not WTC - eg unemployed JSA claimants, the few people still on Income Support, those on ESA with children.

Entitlement means eligible, not payout. If you see what I mean!
