I have battled for 2 days TRYING to set up a SECURE wireless connection:rolleyes: finally managed it after trawling through all the information on here, HOWEVER! something 's definately NOT right. This is what happens.
I boot up the laptop and I see the 2 little connect screens working away but they never actually connect, if I go into Network Connections right click on the wireless network icon/properties/wireless connections............. if I then click on 'Use Windows to configure my wireless connections settings' it will THEN connect to the router.

I have obviously messed something up but can't for the life of me find out what. PLEASE could someone show me what I have done wrong.

I have XP Linksy's wag200 router (new!)

Somewhere in the settings will be an option for the router to connect automatically, I had the same problem and after a bit of head scratching I found it. It's not anything that you have done wrong, just a setting that needs tweaking

Try in the laptop settings just as you are doing at the moment but have a nosey round, it should be in Properties or similar. It should be something like "connect to network automatically".

tbh there isn't anything wrong with the way you are connecting atm but having it set to connect automatically just saves you a bit of time.

    Mixed
    Disabled
    G Only
B only ? (at the moment I have mixed ticked)
In wireless security what should be ticked:
    WEP
    Disabled
    WPA Personal
    WPA2 Personal
    WPA2 Mixed ??? (I have WPA Personal)

On Wireless Access should I "Allow All " or "Restricted Access?"

Before calling the men in white coats, did you find what albert told you to look for?
Assuming that everything is working, right click on your wireless network icon, view available wireless networks, change advanced settings, wireless networks, highlight your ssid, properties, connection. Make sure "connect when this network is in range" is ticked. Click OK, advanced, make sure Access point (Infrastrucure) networks only is selected, and automatically connect to non-preferred networks is unticked.

It sounds like your settings are OK but you just need to make it connect automatically.

I think you need to have "Restricted Access" ticked as this will stop anyone from using your connection. You may need to enter your MAC address into the router settings otherwise it will block you as well lol !!!!

    A couple of further suggestions:-

Try switching off the encrypttion and see if it works, then set up the encryption. When using encryption make sure the key setting is correctly selected (e.g shared or open key)

    Try a different channel setting.

    Check the Windows firewall.
