Windows keeps losing Canon driver: why?

Virus free, malware free desktop PC running Vista OS has been happily teamed with Canon MP600 printer for three years. But every time the printer is switched on nowadays, Windows announces that it has to go look for the printer driver. I let it do so, it finds it, and that's it, away we go. When I've finished, I turn off the printer. Next time I turn it on, Windows announces it can't find the printer driver. So I waste time on the same rigmarole as before.
Anyone know why this particular driver keeps being 'lost' by Windows?
As to resolving the problem, I've followed all Microsoft Support's advice and got precisely nowhere (USB hub unchecking and checking: lost the use of my mouse thanks to that brilliant Microsoft advice, as well as my wirelress router connection but heigh ho).
I've also uninstalled and re-installed the Canon MP600 software and updated all the Canon drivers from the Canon website. Despite that, Windows still loses the driver, finds the driver, installs the driver, then loses it again.
