HELP - How to compare home insurance

I am in the process of looking for cheaper buildings and contents insurance and of course have read all the info on this site. Can anyone tell me the easiest way to compare like for like. ie I may get a cheaper annual price but then discover that I am not covered for something I am at present. The pages of policy wording seem so long and confusing so I thought I would ask the moneysaving experts for any assistance they can provide me.

Hi, my current insurer is Norwich Union, and they sent me a renewal notice with all that I am covered for on it, with a price for each section. It even included a specific amount for a buildings rebuild.
So I used that as a comparison for each insurerer that I spoke to, and then asked the likely ones to send a quote which I then checked thoroughly with the renewal notice to see that everything I wanted was covered, and to the same amount.
