When packed lunch isn't an option...

Not sure if this is strictly the right place but I wanted to ask what serious DFW do when they need to eat away from home but can't do the normally suggested packed lunch (perhaps because you've been caught unawares or because there's nowhere to put it wherever you are) do you grab a sandwich from Tesco? A bag of chips? Give in and go to the pub/ fast food place? Or just go without until you get home?
It's something I occasionally have a problem with - doubled by being vegetarian, and tripled by thinking mayonaise is gross (!). So I wondered what you all thought the best DFW meal-on-run was.

Thanks

  • When my DH was diagnosed as diabetic I started to keep a cereal bar and a bottle of juice in my car or handbag. I have on occasion used them myself as an emergency meal.
Failing that I would go for a sandwich or meal deal from somewhere like Tescos or Boots where I can at least get loyalty points on the unbudgeted expenditure.

Definatly boots or gregs, in an absolute dire emergency i might possible consider hunting out a macdonalds.

In this situation I would buy a bag of apples or pears and some oatcakes/other crackers or maybe some nuts. A bit bulky but more (healthy!) food for your money than a sandwich. You would have to lug them around after you'd eaten enough though.

I'm with the Boots idea. Their sweet chilli chicken wrap is divine

I always use nutty muesli bars and slender milkshakes as an emergency meal replacement for travelling.

The sarnie shop round the corner does a fab egg mayo baguette with crisps and a can of drink for £1.95. No loyalty points, but a filling although not too healthy meal which I've just weaned myself off!

Basically I would just look out the cheapest sarnie offer.

I have the same problem as you with regards to having to buy lunch out. I don't like mayo either and I can't stand sandwishes from petrol stations or small cornershops. I try to find a Tesco or Sansbury or Boots as you get points and it is not that expensive. Smaller sandwich bars often have a special of the day that is cheaper.
I have low bloodsugar so if I need to eat it has to be quickly but if I can't find anything I end up with a piece of cheese or crackers.

    Sorry - I meant:

Buy (e.g.) a whole box of oatcakes, eat 1 of the small packs. Still got 3 packs left in the box. Still have to carry that box around with you if you are working away from normal workplace/going to a meeting etc.
