    If there are any domestic abuse issues (which doesn't simply mean that you are physically attacked, it's much broader than that) then look at the Womens Aid website.

    The Shelter website also has a section on relationship breakdown and domestic abuse, plus how applying for homelessness at the local council works - what they consider a priority and how your application is assessed.

    Many councils operate deposit guarantee schemes for those on low income/in housing need.

    A landlord or agent invariably knows when a tenant is on benefits, even if they try to suppress it, so that was pretty dumb advice by CAB. Yes, Local Housing Allowance (housing benefit for private tenants) is paid directly to tenants but if they can't demonstrate their income is sufficient for the rent during the tenancy application process, it's not particularly hard to work out.

    Lone parents only need to work 16 hours - the change to 24 hours applies only to couples.
