Improvement grant for OAP

Anyone know if there are such a thing as improvement grants available for OAP's? My mother suffers from arthritis and has difficulty getting in/out the bath, wondered if an improvement grant or similar to change bath to walk in shower is available or even exist, a friend was saying these do happen but are council/district dependent (she's not a council tenant, but direct.gov website say this is not neccesary) had a look on direct.gov website but can't see how to apply.
anyone ever done this or have info available?

  • one way will be to contact social services who might send out an occupational therapist to assess if there are needs, and depending on circumstances some help may be avaliable, but it can be a lengthy process

I can't answer your specific question but I've been looking up arthritis related care for a relative and if you google 'arthritis charities', you will identify on the first page of the results 3 excellent advice sites that cover the illness, benefits, care and support, so I expect these will help you to understand her options and rights.

Also see if there is a Care and Repair in your area as they help obtain grants for adaptations

Many people who can no longer manage to use a bath normally can cope well with some kind of bath seat, which is much cheaper then conversions.
