Posted something similar on the Cutting Tax board, but thought you may find this useful.

Those of you who have a wife that stays at home looking after the kids, or a wife that works but does not use their entire tax allowance may find this petition interesting.

Currently, there is a no government policy that promotes the idea that a parent looks after their own children. Families are effectively penalised if they make the decision for one of the parents to give up work to look after the children full time. This results in the household paying a relatively higher amount of tax as only one taxable allowance can be used – while there are still two adults in the home. This will result in net income reducing by circa £40 a week in increased income tax and national insurance contributions.

Currently, the most tax efficient approach would be to push both parents out to work and the kids into child care. The government will pay towards the cost of child care if both parents are out of the home – but is not interested in any inducements for parents to look after their own children. This mismatch in fiscal policy and what is best for a child is terrible.

Made it quite clear in the OP that is was for a petition, why bother reading down if your going to simply make a sarcastic comment.

This is a key aspect for thousands of families in this country and should be given the respect it deserves.

Do you think the Government are going to respect it??

This site is having running problems and it can't be helped with the enormous number of people posting links to petitions that will be ignored anyway!

I'd sign a petition to ban petitions! :D

I think the administrators of this website will be delighted that so many people are interested in using it.

If we take the position that all politicians are liers and they will not honour the wishes of the public then whats the point of any debate? If I were in power I would at least have a look at what people think and shape policy around it.

We live in a democracy and if there is any avenue that views can be expressed it should be taken. If politicians wish to ignore it then they can expect trouble at the next election.

    Fair enough.

I work on Whitehall, for the Government, and I won't hold my breath.

I'm an Accountant working for The Department for Work and Pensions. I see first hand the billions that are wasted as a result of the control freaks that want to take so much of our money only to give it back to us.

Get rid of tax credits and tax people less in the first place. Transferable allowances to working spouses and an increase in tax code according to how many children you have would be much fairer and cheaper for the state. Families will not have to worry about getting incorrect awards and not worry about how an increase in salary will reduce how much tax credit they get.

That's how it is done in the USA. I know the Yanks are not to be admired for a lot of things, but in this instance I think they have got it 100% right.
