Wipers going on R reg Merc C240

Hi all,
We have a lovely 15 yr old Merc C240. During a traumatic drive yesterday in terrible weather the wiper (there is one) started to slow up over the central section of the windscreen. It intermittently did this and then stopped.
The AA arrived and got it going again, but it did slow down and fail after this, and we got towed to our destination.
We are going to a garage tomorrow, but are on hols! So although recommended by friends here it isnt my usual Merc Man who I trust. He sod me the car, does nothing but these and is really reliable.
Any ideas if this is motor/cam/worse? And ideas on prices for getting a new wiper system.
As it is an intermittent issue would prefer just to start again with this part as getting caught on A30 in hailstorm with failing wipers was not fun (but AA felt acceptable... complaint on the way to them!).
Thanks,

The eccentric gear probably needs greasing, if you peel back the big rubber cover from around the wiper spindle you should be able to see the mechanism or most of it, a lubricate with some aerosol grease should provide enough lube for now till you have the time to strip the covers off properly, worth doing annually.
Its probably noisy at the moment, once greased it should be silent.0 -
not done one but know they seize
watch your fingers
talking to a bloke last week nearly lost his digit when a wiper went for him

Thanks for the fast replies, and the link. A handy forum as I really like the older Mercs as need an automatic due to my bad back.
We had to lube with WD40 twice yesterday before giving up, do you think a grease lubricant better?
I was thinking of just getting it stripped this time while on hols as it is predicted rain here, there are massive mobile blackspots and it seems to need doing! Any ideas on price?? Was thinking £150-200?NOT a NEWBIE!

There is a priceless thing that you must find if you are going to own a Benz, a competent specialists indy.
Not as you wil need one for the well engineered wiper gear, that will explain itself if you have a look see, but for all the other things you will need expertise, they are not a car for just anyone to muck about with.
WD40 is what you use to free off a Yale lock for an hour it is of no use at all for the present purpose.0 -
Thanks G&S, I have an independant older Merc only guy, hence feeling so bereft away from home! It looks like rain all week so want to try and get it back to him with as little damage as poss! Buying lube and rainex tomorrow and will drop in a garage here rec by friend to see if they would take a look to see if it is damaged or just dried out. No tools on holiday!
I found him by accident after buying my first Merc (25 yr old 300SE in white with dove grey leather interior!!!) from typical dodgy dealer when I needed an automatic in a hurry! Went to the indy and he nearly wept as he usually has a couple for sale or will look for what you want... still, loved the pimpmobile!NOT a NEWBIE!
