Dodgy deodorant

Options
Does anyone else have this problem, or is it just me?

Certain deodorants I have used actually smell like BO when I am wearing them!

I know it isn't me being smelly as I have just had a shower, but I find some deodorants start to smell odd the minute they get to body temperature.

I have a list of about 3 now, different brands which I can't use as they stink.

Any ideas?!

Just wondering what types you've tried? I use either Sure of Dove and find they work well for me. They also have a 'maximum protection' range which you use every day and I think works.

I would also wonder if your applying your deoderant straight after washing? BO isn't so much your sweat that smells its the bacteria on your skin which can be caused by everything from how clean your clothes are to what you have eaten: eg spicy foods can maks you sweat more as can soy, lactose and ginger- these do affect different people differently though and I am sure there are others to add to that list.

I'm the same and have different ones that work for different things. I found Mitchum works for me but as its so strong I cant use it every day.

Years ago I worked in a chemists and we had a lady come in asking to try perfumes. She had a strange skin and most perfumes smelled awful on her except Sandalwood. It may be your skin that changes the smell.

I usually apply my deodorant after I have had a shower in the morning. My bathroom is freezing though, so its not even as if I am warm when I apply it.

Dove seems to work OK but I find it leaves white marks. Garnier mineral something or other is one of the smelly ones. Any of the deodorants that have a cocoa scent to them seem to stink when they get warm. I found one Sure deodorant that was amazing. It was a pink one, but limited edition I think. I can't remember what it was called and haven't seen it since :(

I am currently using one from Aldi as I totally ran out of money and it is awful. I am better off not actually using any deodorant as it really does smell bad. Saying that though, I find their make-up to be pretty good.

It is so annoying! I can't tell from having a quick spray in the shop what it will be like when I am wearing it and so it is costing me a fortune in trial and error!

Are you washing your clothes frequently enough? Could the odour be lingering?

Lots of men will shower and then will then put on clothes that need a wash, and then wonder why they still smell! (I'm guessing you're female though).

I am female, and I do wash my clothes regularly.

I am guessing it is not down to that as it only seems to be certain deodorants that stink, rather than me being smelly all the time!

Oh, I am painting such a lovely image of myself!!

I'm sure the guy I used to work with did this. The smell was something else, I used to dread getting too near him _pale_

OP have you thought about using an unscented deodorant or a deodorant stick, like Toms of Maine?
  • Try a deodorant that does not contain aluminium as this can block pores and make you sweat more, thus not as effective. Body shop, lush and boots and most supermarkets stock aluminium free deo.
  • I second the Lush deodorant. It comes as a bar that you rub on your armpits and is really effective.

Agree with other posters: the best deodorants I've found are Mitchum (but if I use it all the time it irritates my skin, I find Powder Fresh the best scent), Sure Cotton Fresh solid and Dove solid. I don't buy any others as don't find them effective. I think the solid ones don't really have much of a scent so you may not have the problem of the scent reacting with your skin.

I also think using some talc or baby powder on my skin before applying the deodorant helps.
