Hi, My best mate's car (astra 150 cdti 1.9) has gearbox bearing issues would it be...
Covered under warranty? hes with gocarwarranty and it clearly states gearbox bearings are covered hes worried because he tried to claim before when he had an egr issue and the company didnt pay out
As far as i understand it if it says the part is covered it should be covered right?
Someone mentioned wear and tear so i'm a little confused couldnt they write everything off to wear and tear?
it had coming up to 86k on the clock and he drives it like he wants to keep it no putting foot down no wheel spins a genuine driver who uses it for his job.
Any help greatly appreciated!

You will need to read the policy very carefully. In my opinion these 3rd party warranties are of little value. I don't know anyone who has made a successful claim. How long has he owned the car?
He may be a careful driver, but that is irrelevant. How many previous owners clocked up 86K ........"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

80k miles by the local vicar who drove to church 40 miles away at 5am on sundays, then home again at night. No traffic and all at 30 - 40mph, So the engine was virtually unworn.
Then it was driven for 5000 miles by an idiot that thought the rev counter had to hit the top of the red section in every gear. And delivered pizza's every night averaging 5 miles or less per journey.
Thrashed even from cold.
Be lucky if it lasts another 5000 miles.
Thats the problem with 2nd hand cars you usually never know how its been treated previously.
Used car warranties are a joke usually, They may consider 86k miles to be fair wear and tear so not covered.
Only contacting them will tell, Careful also about the diagnostic work, Some wont cover that. So you need to pay a garage to diagnose it and then they decide whether its covered or not.
If they do cover it, Speak to the garage and consider paying them the extra to put a new clutch in whilst the gearbox is off.
Might be worth considering that if its not covered as well thinking about it.
How much labour would they charge to fit the clutch later?
If its got a dual mass flywheel maybe change that also. Labour charges later could make it costly. And at 86k miles possibly not that far off being needed.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
This is an impossible question to answer, warranty companies generally don't cover anything electrical, or any moving parts.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

From memory 1.9 CdTi's do have gearbox issues, OH has one and although his is fine I recall reading horror stories.

I'm almost certain someone will have had similar issues and found resolution with a dealer. You will need to join the forum but its free and it is worth it.0 -

Is it an actual bearing in the gearbox (I would expect that to last well over 100,000, 200,000 miles). I would expect the warranty to cover this.
Or is it a clutch release bearing? I would expect a warranty company to not cover this. It's considered a wear and tear item and they can break at any time. At 86K miles, then it's not unusual if previous owners have been riding the clutch for example.0 -
whatever you do when dealing with the warranty company (and this goes for your chosen garage when they speak to them too) is to avoid the words like 'worn out' always just use the word, 'failed' they will try to catch you out, but stick to your guns.
this is how we got our range rovers headgasket replaced at a cost of £1200 by the warranty provider, my mechanic just kept saying, the part has failed.....0
