Hi All!
OH and I are hoping to visit Cambridge sometime this year to celebrate a "special" birthday. We enjoy cycling and will be taking our bikes and hopefully staying at the central Travelodge or similar.
Does anyone know of any not too strenuous day rides, preferably to somewhere interesting with perhaps a pub lunch stop?
We will spend a day or two looking round the city as well but some nice rides would make it perfect.
Hope someone can help,
love, Daisy xx

Cambridge is all interesting - what sort of thing do you want? The Good Pub Guide or something like this might help.

Thanks Sambucus, have had a look at that and it looks great. xUp Jacob's Creek without a paddle!0

if it's a really nice day you could bike to the granchester tea romms and chill out http://www.orchard-grantchester.com/0

good map of cycle routes in Cambridge here:

Station cycles do bike hire and is pretty close to the travelodge. Actually I think there is another bike shop on hills road right opposite, but don't know if they do hire.
The blog noted above has a lot of really good info on rides out of the city (stuartbell).
The new guided busway has a lovely tarmac cycle path next to it -- great for traffic free, stress free cycling. Histon is a good place to stop for a pub lunch, there are about 6 pubs in the village. Red Lion is probably the best.
Someone else mentioned grantchester -- there's a nice cycle route that takes you along the river there too.

Travelodge is 2 minutes from the station so also think about taking your bikes on the train somewhere and cycling back.
Lots of local places, Ely is almost 20 miles but a lovely market town and you can cycle/walk most of the way along the river Cam back. As others have said, definitely cycle along the Guided Bus Cycle track - it's great.
Loads of lovely villages within 5 miles of the city. Grantchester is lovely but it can be very touristy. Also, Barton, Coton, Girton, Histon, Shelfords - all with decent pubs too.

Madingley is a nice spot about six miles from Cambridge. When I usedd to live in Cambridge (some time ago admittedly!) the Madingley Rd wasn't very busy and was fine for cycling. The Three Horseshoes pub in Madingley has a reputation for very good food too!Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0

Many thanks to all of you, these are just the kind of ideas I was hoping for. I will book the Travelodge for September and try to do as many of these as we have time for.

Bit late but just noticed your post.
You can also cycle along the river to Waterbeach (in the opposite direction to Grantchester) which is quite a nice cycle and takes you to a Chef & Brewer pub on the river which has a nice garden. Completely flat and not too far! Be warned if you do go this way you will have to share the path with some pretty single-minded rowing coaches though, depending on the time of day.
You probably already know this, but the Travelodge isn't really central at all. It's on the other side of the station from town, roughly a half-hour walk into the centre. But if you have bikes you can always cycle in anyway. It's on a leisure park with bowling, cinema, food outlets, but otherwise there's not much in the immediate vicinity. It's not too far to walk to the pubs off Mill Road though.
Have fun!0
