I have been given an I phone G3s, locked to o2 . How can I unlock it please ..

You need to pay for it to be unlocked. So either the person who gave you it, needs to contact O2 and ask to get it unlocked (because it's prolly still registered to them)
or
Look at your local mobile phone shop/stalls to unlock it for you.
or
Look on ebay.

It doesn't answer your question exactly but you could also get an O2 SIM card - either PAYG for on a contract

Depending on which OS it has, couldn't you jailbreak and unlock it?

You could also get an O2 PAYG sim and then call customer services to have it unlocked. It may cost £10-15 but this way you don't need to contact the person you bought it from.
