Ink Cartridges

Hi
Can anyone tell me how I can tell if the ink cartridges I buy are genuine?
I only ever order Canon - I buy them through Amazon because they are cheaper - the box seems identical to that sold in WHSmiths, but I've just started thinking they may not be genuine.
I don't seem to get that many copies as you are supposed to.
Any ideas or am I just being paranoid?
Many thanks

You're being paranoid. Why would anyone insist on genuine ink cartridges when perfectly good refills can be purchased from Ebay for less than £1 each?0
-
I'm, thinking the same, I got mine (HP 300s) from Amazon in December and they ran out this week. I've not even printed colour and nowhere near the 200 sheets using b&w.
I'm going to count every sheet I print this time and see how many I really get.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

If you switch a printer off between uses, most printers will use ink when switched on, and most will use colour ink when printing black and white
" Keeping in stand by mode might be useful: If you use your printer frequently leaving it in standby mode can save some crucial ink. Every time the printer is switched on it used up a little bit of ink for the initializing process and also consumes additional electricity. "
http://www.thebloggieman.com/2012/02/simple-tips-to-save-ink-while-printing.html
" Set printing to Gray scale/ Black & white print: Printing in gray scale minimizes the use of color, if the printing is set to color print and you print some text which is black in color, it still mixes some color to make it black.
So it would be better to keep it in gray scale setting. To set the printer to the Black & White mode go to ‘Printing Preferences’, select ‘Black & White/ Print to Gray scale’ and click ‘OK’. Select ‘Color’ while printing colored documents. "

I wish. I just got all excited over this post. Checked out ebay and the compatibles for canon 510 are around £10 each. Apparently they need to be chipped.
I would like to bring my printing costs down - I only pay about £13 for what I believe are genuine canon - happy to pay £10 if I know I will get equivalent amount of copies.
Does anyone here buy 510's - are compatible's good value?0 -
Actually, just been to order some more and Amazon have got the genuine ones down to £10.79.
Crazy thing is, after I use them, I sell them on ebay and get about £3.00 each.
Think I should stick to what I'm doing or change printer that I can get cheaper compatible cartridges. Thanks everyone.0 -
I use jet-tec cartridges, which are compatible with my Canon printer (MP970), and I've been very happy with the results.
Sadly the place I usually get them from, jettec-online.co.uk appears to have its website down today - I came on here to try to find a good value alternative!
To give you an idea of the savings, jettec-online sell the equivalent to the Canon PGi-5 Black for £4.61
I'm now going to have to search all the other suppliers of jettec for the best price today, since I need replacement cartridges urgently - serves me right for leaving it so late, blush.0 -
Hey I've found a cheaper supplier!
www.jettecplus.com
Price for the Jet Tec cartridge I quoted above (the larger black cartridge for my Canon printer) is £4.39
And they give another 5% off if you buy 5 cartridges.
Can't be bothered to research any further, life's too short :rotfl:0 -
Found a even cheaper seller, complete 1 set of chipped cartridges £4.19, or you could buy 2 sets aka 10cartidges for £5.95
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/rexccs?_trksid=p4340.l2563 from this seller. some more info. in the search box type in MP970.

Two things for the OP:
(i) there is also an option to print in draft, called "fast" on my Canon (as well as greyscale), which also economises on ink - apologies if you already do this
(ii) If you leave the printer to always print in greyscale, and don't use colour for a while, you may experience printing difficulties - so its important to ensure you do use colour now and then to stop the ink drying in the printheads.0
