Tile primer needed?

Hi guys

To cut a long story sort of not short, I started tiling our small bathroom and having measured everything with a gauge stick and deciding to tile with the middle of the first tile in the middle of the windows, I then rather ingeniously screwed a baton on to the wall flush to the centre line.... naturally I got about 1-2 sqm of tiles onto the wall and then realised my mistake

on the upside, this was my first time tiling and the tiles looked great, however, I've removed them because they were in the wrong place, and, in doing so, I've removed the paint and in some places I'd say approx 1mm of loose plaster....
I've now cleared the rest of the plaster in that area and the wall is down to solid grey (concrete?)...

So do I need to prime this before tiling or will it be fine?

The tiles going on are only 6"x6" plain white, quite thin and light

I should also ad that this is simply a wc, so it wont be damp or wet in the room

cheers

always pva bare plaster, mix 1 part pva with 5 parts water & paint it on with a brush & let it dry overnight before you tile (you will drip it on the floor so put a dust sheet down).
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

I'm wondering what the surface actually is... I thought it may be cement render?

It's grey in colour... is this cement?

Also, is it ok to use pva? I use it for painting, but I read it's considered taboo for tiling?

You do not tile over paint, No adhesive will full adhere to the the substrate. Any decent adhesive manufactor will state this

PVA is also not suitable for tile, Use a synthetic primer such as mapei primer G. Pva reactivates when wet so is not suitable for tiling shower/wet areas etc

i have tiled on plaster, emulsioned walls, PREIVIOUS TILED WALLS WITH TILES HACKED OUT AND WALLPAPERED WALLS!!!!

Never had any problems with tiles comming off and never used pva or primer.

I always score the walls so the grout gets a bite. I do not fill any small holes, just use grout/adhesive.

If a large hole i use polfilla or plaster, its irrelivent as tile just has too stick and be flat.

Call me a cowboy but it works lol

BTW i had an mate that tried to tile on wallpaper without scoring and they all fell off the next day.lol

Sorry to say it but if you tile to wallpaper even if you have scoredit, then that is what you yiled to NOT the wall! Scoring the wall paper means that your tiles will have stuck in the lines but mainly to wall paper.
Bare plaster - prime with APD not PVA.
Emulsion should be scored in 2 or 3 directions if you cant remove it (any loose flakes must be removed). Then primed.
Anything heavier than those 6x6 inch tiles would injure or kill you if they came off and hit you in the bath. That is why you should stick tiles to solid surfaces only.

    Good luck
