Coin star /coin counting machines

These machines which you throw your coin jars into in supermarkets cream off in the region of 10% of your pennies and some only give you a voucher for a specific shop

They are often located near the self check outs which will also count your change and take nothing for it, maybe a little more time ?

Could be a a problem when the customers behind want to lynch you for holding them up ??

The deal in this house is OH gets all the shrapnel ie 1p, 2p, 5p to do what he wants with. Every so often he drags them down to ASDA to the machine and buys himself wine gums or beer or something. The idea is to keep reinforcing that saving money = treats.

I took all my change to my bank. I'd bagged it up so all they had to do was weigh it. Was glad ds was still in a pram as I wouldn't have liked to carry the £120 it came to!

I'm not doing so well at keeping change at the mo, don't think I have any £1 coins in my tin as I've found a use for them.
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.
  • HSBC has a coin counting machine too that does it for free.

But when the bus to get to HSBC in the town centre is £4.00, paying 10p in the pound to Coinstar seems a lot more attractive.

  • Try using 40 quid in two pence pieces in the self-check-out. I fear the machine would fail before you've fed them all in.

But I agree: 7 or 8 percent is a terrible rip-off. Problem is, some people have had issues with counter-staff when trying to change or deposit large amounts of coins at the bank. And you don't know whether you'll get that until you've already hefted umpteen kilos of coins there.

Take it to the local pub or corner shop as they'd quite happily exchange it.
  • Self-service tills are your friend! Admitedly the most in one go I've put in is £21.56, but it was all in change (1p,2p,5p and 10p coins) and weighed a ton.
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja- vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before

I just dont get these people who use a coin star machine. They're a rip off and surely half the fun of having saved your small change is counting it? By the way I find if you go to the business banking queue there's never a problem changing coins to notes.

Small shops will usually gladly take it off you. It costs a fortune for them to 'buy' change from the banks.

Why do so many people build up collections of loose change in the first place? I use mine up as I go along...

We had a customer that paid her shopping with 5p, 2p and 1p coins - shopping was about £28. It broke the self scan as it cannot cope with such a large amount of coins. Based on the fact the customer had roughly the same number of coins of each denomination, it was 1,000 coins.

Now some of our self scans have issues with 5p coins. This year's mint of 5p coins are half a millimetre thicker than the other ones and some of the ss don't like them. As well the machines don't give change in 10p and 50p - getting many coppers. I just throw them in next time.
