New buy vs. secondhand appliances

I'm looking into moving into an unfurnished flat - and would need a washing machine and fridge freezer.
How does it compare to use older second hand appliances picked up for low cost - but potentially more electrically power hungry, versus buying new?
A US based site (have had problems putting link in but google Michael Bluejay how to save electricity) seems to indicate to me that unless I'd be getting a very old second hand fridge freezer (10+ years) I'm better off cheap second hand. Do people concur? Of course maybe its worth thinking about the risk of breakdowns with older secondhand appliances.

I'd look to see what was available on freecycle / freegle. When you first move into an unfurnished flat you may have quite a few expenses, and this would allow you to take your time.0

Make sure you buy decent second hand appliances... we just picked up a zanussi cooker on gumtree, needed it as a temp fix until we replace the kitchen
you can get new fridges and washers dirt cheap nowadays, plus they all come with a min 1 year guaranteee.....0
