I want to make a "book" for my soon to be 8 yr old and I want to make it similar to a diary, and a to do list and planner so he can jot down his homework, play dates and the like as well as make notes to himself. I have an old version of Word and Excel as well as old Lotus Suite but I notice that some of the Word docs are now .docx and I cannot open them. Hope some-one can help me.

There are numerous software products out there for "to do lists" and planning, ranging from simple to complex. For example the Lightning plug-in for the Thunderbird email client is free and works well, though probably a bit complex for an 8 year old.
Try searching for Open Source software rather than "free". That way you tend to avoid the many, many products that appear to be free but are really only crippled trial versions, where you have to pay for the version that works properly.0
