Hi all
Would appreciate a bit of help. OH received 2 tax codes today both dated the same (5th April 2012). One is for this coming years tax code 6th April 2012-5th April 2013, no problem there, his code will be 166L.
Here's the confusing bit, the other tax code says
'Your new tax code for 6 April 2011 to 5 April 2012 is 188T, which replaces K78'. This notice is also dated (5th April 2012)
My OH's tax code used last year was K78. How can they replace a code for a year already gone? Does this mean that for all of last year his code should have been 188T? Never had a T code before.
Totally confused, any enlightenment would be very much appreciated.
Many Thanks

You can only contact HMRC and ask.
It's the 2nd recent similar post - where last year's Code has been amended too late to have any effect. Not sure if there's an issue - as I'm sure the system shouldn't allow a Code to be issued after late March.
I'll add the other post if I find it.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
It's here :

...... read post #6. In particular the HMRC response to the effect there's no rational reason for the late issue of the 11-12 P2.
But I would ring them. Even if it's just them hunting down an idiot in their midst! If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Many thanks for your reply Mikeyorks.
Spoke to my OH, he gave the HMRC a call earlier today. They said it is probably due to the fact that they are waiting for his P60 and P11D to make sure the tax paid is correct it will then be reviewed, my OH then asked if he would be due a refund as his code for all of last year was K78 but the notice he received today said 188T replaces K78 for last year, surely a 188T code is alot better than a K78 code, not much of a clear response from them. I suppose we will have to wait until the P11D's are issued in July and the P60's this month.
Just one more question does the P11D's that are issued in July relate to last years tax or this coming years tax?
Many thanks once again0 -

Certainly. It's an extra £2665 in allowances. So worth £533 if he pays tax at 20% (double that if he's at least £2665 into the 40% band). But - it all depends if the 188T is accurate? The 'T' - by the way - implies there's something in the Code that's under review.Just one more question does the P11D's that are issued in July relate to last years tax or this coming years tax?
The benefits on the P11D relate to the now closed year (11/12). But will usually be accounted for in the 12/13 coding. Most benefits run a year in arrears. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Many thanks again Mikeyorks, that's cleared up quite a few points for us, just have to sit and wait till they review it (hence the 'T' code) once the P11D has been submitted in July.0
