Confusing letter from the Tax Office?? Please help.

Hi,

I hope I am posting in the correct forum.

Last year with all the fiasco over under/ overpaid tax, I was one of the unlucky few who had unpaid and had my tax office amended to reflect this.

My tax code was sent to me in a letter dated 31st January 2011 as 565L for 2011/2012 to reflect the underpayment, Earlier this week I got a letter for with my tax code as 810L for the period 2012/2013. This letter was dated 24th January 2012 (I assume printed in advance).

However this morning I have recieved a letter dated 2nd April 2012 saying that my Tax code is 745l for the period 6th April 2011- 5th April 2012 and this REPLACES my tax code 565L. No further information at all... I have tried to call the tax office but apprently they are closed.

I really dont understand such a confusing letter saying it replaces 565L...Does this mean that I am possibly entilted to a refund on some tax and that they looked and my tax code was too high last year??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Happy Easter.

Personal opinion on this would be to phone them on Tuesday morning (or an even better idea is to leave it until the end of next week) and find out what’s happening.

I’d say that the letter is referring to replacing 810L with 747L, and in my experience with HMRC, would be the most likely option, however it’s up to you to check.

[STRIKE]What TY is specifically mentioned on the letter? I couldn’t find it if it was there. [/STRIKE] You should be owed £1800. Are you a £100k+ person/self-employed?

That's fine. 810L is the new tax code for 2012/13.

It would mean that you are due a refund. However it's obviously a bit out of date.

If you post the figures from your final payslip - ie the one marked Mth 12 or Wk 52 - we can check if you are due a rebate. We would need tax code, taxable pay and tax paid.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks for the help so far, I dont have the payslip yet but my salary is £21,320 pa, after tax, pension and Union deductions I take home £1338.38. I will get the full payslip when I go back to work on Tuesday.

I am hoping I am due a refund, althought got very confused as the letter specifically relates to last year and uses the word replaces, It was only one year I underpaid tax on so I dont know think I will be due any more deductions on this year hence me been set at the standard 810L, I really hope this isnt some mistake in the years and this years code will be 745L.

    Ill keep you updated.

    Thanks again.

It's not too difficult to work out. The restriction in your coding last year is shown on the Coding Notice they sent you. And, as it's been in place a full year will have collected an extra £360. So does that correspond to the underpayment?

Spoke to the tax office today, the exact underpayment from 2008/2009 was £363 which I paid back through my tax last year at £30 per month.

The tax office said that someone retrospectively changed my tax code on 2nd April but have no idea why and there is no notes anywhere to explain why. Puts alot of faith in the Tax office and their systems. They are going to forward the query to the service team but will take 6-8 weeks to be sorted. They agree the way the letters have been sent does lead to the impression I am owed a rebate or explanation.

I dont really understand how I can owe over £300 one year, repay it and then be due a refund for it again.....

Anyhow I shall keep you updated if/ when I ever get an explanation from the HMRC.

    As post #5 ........ you're not due a refund.

Clearly a misunderstanding relating to a Code being triggered in the last 3 days of a tax year. I'm surprised the HMRC system allows that to happen - as it was never going to get processed.

But be grateful it wasn't issued a month earlier - otherwise the £360 would have been repaid via pay. Then they'd have chased you for it again!
