Mortgage protection insurance

I took out payment protection insurance when we arranged a mortgage some three years ago, at that time my wife had a part time job I was in full time employment and in reciept of a pension from a previous employment, this information was given to the lender at the time(Halifax BoS) . Nothing has changed but I have heard stories that if your income is over a certain level insurance will not pay out, in view of this I sent two letters to the insurance company asking the question, I am in reciept of a pension, my wife works what would happen if I were to lose my job, would you pay out?. The answer I recieve is that they would assess the circumstances if that were to happen but they cannot/would not give me an answer prior to any change in circumstances.
Surely if Im paying for a service/insurance I should be able to given a difinative answer.
