iphone 3gs file transfer question

My 13yo son has managed to use up all 8gb of iphone memory with photos and videos. He cannot work out how to transfer all his files onto his laptop. Can anyone suggest something? He is getting quite stressed out about the situation as he is autistic and cannot get on with his routine of going about town and take photos and videos of his favorite subject.
