10GB limit?

Am with VM ASDL but coming to the end of a deal and they won't renew it,(was paying £5.30), they want £17.30 with a £5 rolling credit over 6 months making it £12.30 for unlimited download, evening & w/e calls.

Have already paid BT £120. in January for 12 months line rental saver, so am really stuck with that.

BT have offered a "personal package" of broadband and unlimited UK calls for £9.90 a month,(line rental payable), for an 18 month contract, I would go with this but I am wondering if I would have enough download as they are only allowing 10GB a month. I go on the web most days mainly to surf send a few emails and BBC i-Player if a programme has been missed, no gaming at all. Will 10GB be enough for this?

Or is there a better deal bearing in mind that I have 9 months left on BT's LRS which being non refundable would mean me losing £90.

According to NetMeter I have used :-

Data transferred, up & downloads

Today, 29mb
This week, 29mb
this month, 29mb

Data transferred since 18-02-10, 1.745GB.

These cannot be correct, can they?

Those figures are obviously incorrect - have you checked that it is set up correctly? see here

It sounds like you have not configured Netmeter to "Load on Windows startup"

Netmeter has not missed a beat on the machine that I am using here since 2005.

Your router should give you your sent/received data totals.

You are correct, "Load on Windows startup" was not ticked but is now:o.

How do I get the info from my router?

    Router is:-

    D-Link DSL-2640R
    Wireless G ADSL2+MODEM ROUTER

If 10GB is enough, that's a good deal, you are effectively paying only £5 or £6 pm for the broadband.

    From the DSL-2640R user guide

    • Connect your PC to the router using an Ethernet cable.
    • Open a web browser and enter the address http://192.168.1.1
    • The default username is ‘admin’. The default password is also ‘admin’.
    • If you have changed the password and can not remember it, you will need to reset the router to the factory default setting, which will set the password back to ‘admin’.
    • Click on the Help button for guidance and then navigate to the relevant page showing the stats.

Downloads (obviously) and streaming video are the killers. e.g. 1 hour iPlayer HD is 1.2GB (half for SD).

Yes but I need to know if 10GB is enough based on my OP.

I know it is £5-6 , but I am paying for the calls whether I use them or not, (no matter how these companies package them),and calls during the day are not really an advantage to me.

It may be...I use the internet for about 4 hours a day for watching iPlayer/youtube...whatever and use 40GB per month.

Best I can get from there, (does not appear to have the up/downloads data, although I am sure they are there somewhere), I have copied and pasted, but if it helps I can put it through paint and photbucket.

Does virgin media adsl have a usage tracker? Most ISPs have this to keep track of what you use, and make sure you don't go over.

Also what are the terms of the 10gb. If it's from 8-8pm peak, then rest is off peak, that can make a difference. Most are something like 7/8am-12am peak time, rest off peak (and thus not counted) Some also offer off peak on weekends.

10 gigs is roughly 333 mb a day for the month, which isn't that much really, but that depends on what you do with it. When you say occasionally catch up, is that every couple of days, or once a week? Do you look at things like You Tube videos (those add up substantially on HD settings, and such)

As has been said it's about 600 mb per program streamed. So you do that every 2 days, then there goes your two daily usage pretty much.
    • Find out how much you've gone through on your router (as per above posts to access)
    • Find out what exactly that 10GB covers hours wise (peak/off peak times).
    • Find out if you have a usage tracker on Virgin to see what you have used so far (good to guestimate future use).
    • Find out what your charges are for going over. For example, if it's only another £5 for 5GB, and then you find 15gb is fine, but the next package up is too much, then maybe paying the extra gb's is cheaper/cost effective for you. Assuming they also don't limit the speed on top.
    • Find out what the next package up is costwise too (and how much peak limit you get)

Those are some of the line stats. e.g. Downstream Line Rate : 17691 kbps Upstream Line Rate : 811 kbps

My brother has this router but I have not seen it for at least a year but keep looking as you should fine totals for up/down data there somewhere on one of the many screens.

However Connected Connection Up Time :0:04:30:55 shows that you switch off your router rather than leaving it powered up 24/7, so you may not get any useful total data figures.

Your Netmeter seems to be registering fine now - mine is showing a total up/down of 63.25MB for today.
