You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time

Girls traditionally have 2 godmothers and one godfather. If you are ok with 2 godfathers..and the vicar/priest is ok with it ..then why not ???

    Dear ........

Please join us to celebrate the baptism of Kennedy Louise
    on.....................at..................time............

I always put what sort of food there will be so your guests have an idea if they need to eat ! Such as The service will be followed by an informal buffet ...or light lunch..or something like that!

I would end the invite with "we look forward to you sharing this special day" or something similar !
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

One of the boys' godparents (they have the same 3 each) was too unwell to attend either of the ceremonies for the younger two, so perhaps not being there won't matter, the priest or whoever might be willing for them to be acknowledged as godparents without being there, IYSWIM? In our case the minister knew us and the absent godfather very well, and knew he'd do a good job!

I don't think it matters one iota what combination of Godparents you have as long as they are responsible & upto the job! Remeber they are taking responsibility along side you for the childs spiritual upbringing & development! For the record, our son has 2 of each & so do I.
You can have a Godparent appointed by proxy, if they can't physically be present then someone can take their vows on their behlaf, you will need to arrange it in advance with your vicar/priest but there is precedent for this & perfectly possible.

Agree with Lillibet - due to the responsibilities they are promising to take on, their suitability for the task is more important than their sex. As long as they are grounded in the Christian faith and able to encourage your child practically and spiritually, then I wouldn't worry about it - the minister won't!

We did this as our family are overseas, we arranged with our minister to stand in and take vows on their behalf. Our minister had / has never met either of them; we had to get the Godparents to write a note confirming their agreement to be Godparent. Speak to the vicar and see what you would need to do.

My sister had a godmother who lived too far away to travel to the baptism, my grandma stood in for her on the day. Hope it all goes well and you have a lovely family occaison to remember.

  • i have a friend who was in USA at time of his godsons christening, so his mum stood in for him on the day.

My daughter is having 1 godmother and 3 godfathers, its not up to the sex of the godparent but us choosing someone who we think will take on the responsibility seriously.

hopefully we have chosen well this time. one of our sons godfathers has done a runner leaving mountains of debt behind him, including to us, and my daughters godfather left us in a very difficult position when we found out about his extra marital affairs!!! both have decided no contact with us means no contact with thier godchild.
