Excessive Gas Usage

Hi There,

We have just had our latest gas bill in for Oct - Apr. We have a 4 bed detached house, 2 adults 2children under 3. Our gas usage works out at 132 kWh/day or 48,454 kWh per year (well above average). We have a gas cooker and combi boiler. Heating is on for 6 hrs/day. What do we think excessively high?

My meter is 21 years old, could this be a possible cause?

That does seem high. How are you calculating the 48,454 kwh? This should be done adding 4 bills together. Not 132*365 as your winter usage is sometimes 60-75% of your annual consumption.

You can have your meter tested but very small chance it's faulty.

    16,500kwh is Average annual consumption.

A 21 year old meter is likely to be Imperial - i.e. cubic feet and not Metric.

However it is worth checking as a major cause of incorrect bills is a house having a Metric(cubic metre) meter and billed as Imperial.

A gas unit on an Imperial meter is approx 11.2kWh amd on a metric meter is approc 31kWh

If they are imperial, which they will be, this would be much cheaper for them :-)) don't think this will be the case.

OK, a "smart" answer but trying to make a serious point that from your post you appear unaware of. Much more likely than the meter. Some "21yo meter types" are considered so reliable there is no statutory removal interval.

    Welcome to the forum BTW.

OP, the first thing we needfrom you is you actual annual consumption-not a consumption pro-rata'd from a 90 day winter bill.
132kWh daily over the winter quarter is perfectly feasible. You can easily use more than 50% of your annual total in the coldest couple of months. But 132kWh daily over a whole year is incredibly high.
Just find two readings (actual not estimated) approx a year apart, subtract the earlier from the latter, and convert back to kWh.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
