Hi
Having done a lot of checking through the forum, Im trying to base my question without it sounding like several others wanting advice on a looking for a 2nd hand car.
Im currently driving a Peug 306 basic diesel, v, approx 160k. The car suites my fine..dont want/need speed etc, only a car for work and back, plus bits at the weekend.
I do around 22-3k in total on A roads and am gettting around 50-55 mpg - which does me. Ive had the car 6 years and at the minute, its in need of a cam belt, breaks, exhaust, tyres.. all running costs I know, but as car's getting on a bit was thinking of scrapping and looking for something a bit newer.
due to my miles, in 4-5 years the car will have an extra 100k plus. Another Pug 306 would suite, or something newer.. to possibly an 05/06 for around 3.5k. Trying to keep to simple engines I initially was looking at a Polo or Fabia sdi, or someone did suggest Toyota Yaris diesel for its reliability.
So far Ive checked out a Polo '53 plate - rust in arches and engine screached like something was on way out. Fabia lots of electrics plus 'orange skin' paint.. either rusting or dust under the paint.. odd. also viewed another V 306 with 75k.. too many dashboard lights wouldnt go out.
corsa, fiesta, micra etc 1.4's.. too many write ups saying keep off.
Suggestions please?
Thanks, Richard:)

fiat punto 1.3 multijet
must be under 60,000 miles and service history
drive one to see if you like it
they are better on steel rims0 -
Skoda Fabia/Octavia 1.9 diesel , 2005/6 80K miles plus, look after it and it will last forever. You are looking at £3 - £4K for a really good example.

mmm better on steel rims? just bought the wife a 1.2 punto and never considered the wheels.. is there a problem with the rims? or is it just an improvement in ride quality? BTW the one she has in on alloys
overall a thumbs up for the punto, i liked the multijet, but the mileage she does means a petrol car is the top choice.
i would add, if i was looking for a car to keep for a while, i'd be looking to see if i can find a honda Jazz in my budget.0
