Direct Debit problem

Hi Folks,
I was'nt sure where to put this post but here goes and hope someone can help,
Last year i took out an advert will Yell.com. I agreed to the usual 12 month instalment plan to pay for it. Now i am the first to admit and i dont want a hard time for it :) but i do not check my bank statements too often. A year later a large sum of money left my account, after checking it was Yell taking the years payment in one lump sum. I assumed it was them taking the next years advert charge in advance ( after i canceled it) but later found it was them taking the payment for the year just completed. The year which i agreed to 12 MONTHLY INSTALMENTS. I spoke to my bank at the time i thought it was yell takin the money for the next year and my bank reclaimed the money. I have spoken to Yell and explained i am not happy, obviously, about them breaking the agreement they said they would look into it. I have now been passed to a debt recovery company. Yell have called me but only to offer me a boxed advert and not my dispute. where do I stand.
sorry for the long story. please help[

I feel that if you have had the ad for a year you owe Yell for it. The fact that they have taken the whole lot at the end of the 12 month period when they should have taken the monthly payments as you requested is tough but (and I don't mean to seem mean) the error should have been spotted earlier. What a horrid way to learn to study your statements of account monthly! I hope you had printed off the agreement to pay monthly fees so that you have proof in case the DCA are now trying to ask for more than the annual fee for default.

Yell are aware you are not happy, and that's fair enough, but at the end of the day they also will think you should have spotted the error sooner so I would apportion blame 50/50. If you're having difficulties paying the DCA agree to pay a monthly fee appropriate to the amount you had agreed to pay Yell initially then it will be fair and you will be no worse off. Unless of course you can prove the error of their ways in which case ask for a discount as compensation!
  • Hi. I totaly agree with what you have said and i thank you for the quick reply.
I do intend to pay this amount, but the fact they broke the agreement which i still have has really boiled my blood. It seems that these companies can break the rules and mess about with customers money when they please but when the customer does it its a different story
    Thanks again

Direct Debits are fully covered by the Direct Debit Guarantee.
Use it if you think you qualify
(The taking of monies without the required advance notice is a valid reason)

You will still owe the supplier for the amount, but as you say you are happy to pay them. So contact the supplier and arrange an alternative payment form today :)
