Plot sizes and maps.

I've been told that some local authorities make available, for free, online versions of large scale maps showing plot layouts and sizes. But it has defied all my googling efforts. Does anyone have any ideas please?

Don't know the answer to your question but you could try Google Earth, it has a measuring facility built in.

The one for York is called LocalView it's fantastic for showing school catchment areas, nearest bus stops, libraries etc as well as the plot boundaries. I'm only looking in York so don't know what the other ones are called but that might be a good starting point.

It depends upon the local authority. Mine has a mapping facility linked to the planning part of the site, which gives various levels of magnification.

I also remember using PlanAccess when looking for property in Ceredigion, Wales. With that, one could also access the planning/building regs history of any property going back about 25 years. Theirs was the best on-line system I saw, but these facilities are improving all the time.

I would try Googling PlanAcess for your area.

For new developments, often the plot layouts / sizes are included in the planning application for the council to consider. Most authorities now put details of the planning applications online, including the plans submitted by the developer. This is usually accessed through the planning section of the website.

LocalView is usually used to show council facilities, such as parks, school catchments etc or planning designations set by the local authority - eg this area will be residential, this is a conservation area etc. I have not seen it used to display detailed plot layouts.

I would suggest you have a look on the planning section of you authority website - and if you can't spot anything (some sites are awful) give the planning dept a quick phone call and ask - they are there to help!

Used to work for a planning dept, but moved on now...
