Belkin USB adaptor not seeing network

My brother lives in a student house with 3 others. They have set themselves up with a wireless router. All 3 others are able to use the wireless broadband, but my brother can't.
One of the housemates has also had a problem - and she too has a belkin usb adaptor.

i brought his PC to my house. i thought that if i checked if I could connect his PC to my wireless network then we'd know whether there was a problem with the adaptor or not.

So i set up his PC here with the usb adaptor. It saw 2 of my neighbours' networks but not mine. Even though on my pc my own usb adaptor has 100% signal strength of my network and is much closer than my neighbours' routers!

You also can't even set up the link unless the adaptor can see the network.

i tried to connect to one of my neighbours' to test if the adaptor was working (and they don't encrypt their network) but the button to connect was greyed out.

Totally flumuxed. Have sent him home with his pc and going to try at his house on Sunday.

Help! He is the one in the house that organised them having a phone and broadband and he can't use it. he is struggling as he has to keep going into uni to use their computers.

any ideas most gratefully received.

Not seen this with either mine or my mums belkin. did you use the drivers out of the box, or the latest from the internet?

Have you tried your usb adapter in his laptop? Are you routers set to allow one speed only such as 54g and the adapter is 11g. They should be set to auto. Are you broadcasting the SSID? if not an adapter won't see it unless it has been set up to.
