I car share to work/cheaper insurance?

Hello

To be more accurate, I get a lift to work everyday. I use my car maybe 3 times a week for a 5 min trip to the gym and back.

I called my insurance to see if it would be any cheaper, the person was foreign and couldn't understand me so I hung up.

Does anyone know if it would be cheaper to insure it as just a social driver or casual driver?

It would be cheaper to get rid. You clearly don't need a car.

Having a car as just social and pleasure without commuting will usually be cheaper. Also factor in what your mileage is per annum and what you have declared to the insurer as this affects premiums.

However changing your policy now may incure an admin charge which maybe hogher than the saving.

If the gym is only 5 mins by car why not use a bike to get there and save on the petrol money?

Sensible idea. Thought about it before and with it getting lighter, might be a good shout actually. Cheers
  • Some companies do charge less for Social, Domestic and Pleasure. However the difference may not be enough to make it worth it and you will be uninsured if your lift ever can't come and you drive your car to work.

You can also look at putting a very low mileage in - but in my experience that has little impact on price.

Have you thought about getting rid of the car completely - doesn't seem worth the cost for a 5 min trip to the gym.

  • I have thought about it but I like the freedom it offers me. Financially I should get rid, but convenience etc outweighs it for me :/

How about switch to a classic car? My father only paid about £70/year for his insurance with my mother as a named driver on a limited mileage classic policy. If you get a pre-1973 car the VED is £0 as well (you still need to "buy" a disc but its free)

Although what you save in insurance costs you'll probably spend on tools and books on carburetors

I tend to agree that convenience would overide the finance, but have you looked at whether a taxi, or even a car club (depends on your location), like http://zipcar.co.uk/?redirect_p=0, would work out at less per year.
  • N/a in my city, Manchester. To be honest, don't think I'd go that option either, still not the full freedom effect. Thanks anyway.
