  • You have to be at a very low point in your life and your life be a constant battle to do something so drastic as wls.

I couldn't sleep with constant pains from severe OA in my knees, asthma.

Ate sensibly most of the time but couldn't excersise for more than 5 mins at a time. Even walking would have me screaming in agony.

Almost 2 and 1/2 years ago I had a gastric bypass which I paid for. Why oh why did I wait so long.

The 2 weeks liver shrinkage diet prepares you for what life will be like eating post op. I chose to do this for 2 months before to help get my head around it.

The op itself took and hour and half. Had it 6.30 monday night out 8.30 wednesday night. No complications.

First 4 weeks fluids only, water, tea, juice, watered down soup, no bits. Its strange but your not hungry so its not a problem and if you don't stick to it, your nice little pouch will not heal as well as it should.

Next 4 weeks sloppy food, everything blended down and gradually moving on to lumpy food at the end of this 4 weeks.

After this life gets interesting. You are trying new foods. You have chew everything about 20 times which means you get used to eating cold food. If you don't, it can get stuck and you feel uncomfortable so your either sick or wait till it passes.

At about 4 months I could eat everything except roast beef. Never had a problem with fillet steak but couldn't digest roast beef. Now I can eat anything and have a very varied diet.

My hubby says I am always eating:p

Things is you need to research any surgery fully. The rules are always eat your protein first, then your green veggies/salad etc and finally, and only if you have any room left, carbs.

You need to drink at least 2 litres of fluid a day.

I still eat off a teaplate at home.

I have had a smooth journey but I work hard at it. I walk 4 miles most days or dance for an hour.

Don't expect to have an easy ride but also don't listen to horror stories you read in the papers or from people who have not had this surgery.

If you need any more info shout up. Shaz x

While I respect the decisions of those who have had surgery, or are on the waiting lists (really, good luck to you all) I find it odd that the two most positive comments for surgery have only signed up today and have only ever commented on this thread.

That's not suspicious behaviour at all
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

It's more likely that people who've had positive experiences wanted to join and post - it's not like they are promoting a particular diet.

Interesting to read that people are told protein 1st veggies 2nd carbs 3rd - that's a low carb diet !

A dear friend has had Gastric bypass surgery and has lost 10 stone & looks fabulous. She could barely walk, her legs were full of fluid, suffering from fibromyalgia and her heart was struggling. When offered a band or bypass she opted for the bypass because of her emotional eating problems.

The reason for the food order is carbs (bread, pasta, rice etc) tend to bulk up during the digestive process. So for example, if you eat bread first you have no room for the rest & they tend to make you feel sick.

  • I'm in the morbidly obese category but the thought of bariatric surgery just makes me shudder. I couldn't face the massives changes that it involves or the emotional roller coaster.
I've just joined a gym and although i find exercise unremittingly grim and i'm suffering pain EVERYWHERE right now, i'm determined to keep plugging away until i feel fitter, slimmer and healthier.

I lost my aunt due to this surgery. She'd been very overweight for years and was finding it hard to do her walking exercise partly due to pressure on her joints but mainly due to the hurled abuse at her on her walks, mainly by adults surprisingly. She had the op, picked up MRSA in hospital and killed herself a week later while still in hospital. This obviously colours my opinion on the surgery and the care given so I'm probably not the best person to ask as I'd do every alternative first rather than consider this. Most of all, I wish that people who are overweight did not have to suffer abuse at the hands of other people who feel they are superior in some way as I feel it's a barrier towards feeling supported and encouraged in finding healthier ways to live.

hmm, I've seen the good and the bad of these surgeries due to my job.

Honestly, obesity at this level didn't exist a generation ago. People weren't food addicts nor were they unmotivated to move. I'd probably remind most of you of Hattie Jacques in my uniform.

This is why I'm such a strong believer in eat less, move more. Now, I've got to go and buy a new pair of trainers because I'm seeing a fitness trainer on Monday. I'm determined to be a svelte mother of the groom and get a decent dress. My weight has crept up over the years due to night shifts, a car wreck, and having a husband constantly deployed to either Bosnia or Afghanistan. I stress eat and then I'm too tired on my days off because of the nightshifts to be motivated. I've made changes in my schedule and I will shift 20 pounds (10% of my body weight) by the years end. I didn't bulk overnight and I know I won't take it off fast either.

Hi Gingernutty i actually posted a link on my webpage to allow others on there to give their opinions. I feel it is important that all the information is given as it is much better to have the information of people who have been there and are actually living life (loving life) after bariatric surgery.

I am sorry if you think this is suspicious but as you can imagine it is a subject very close to my heart and if people get the wrong information they could make the wrong choices.
    Regards

Not you, Quillion. You are clearly a long time member and have experience of bariatric surgery......of course, you have an opinion, you help others out and that must be respected.

It was SHAZBAT and ackroydsbabe who, in quick succession, signed up for the first time and commented on what appears to be their pet subject and disappeared again.

    That's suspicious.

They are my girls in our group who have had surgery and felt they had something to add to the thread hence the first time posting.
