i know a few people with the astra G and corsa 1.6 8v engine, all cars have now covered over 80k one highest mileage one has covered 113k.
all of them have popped headgaskets.
is it just me seeing this trend in failure.
two of the astra's are 1 previous owner cars and service history and well maintained (petrol heads are my friends).
seems to pop on or near cyl 3, and spit oil onto the exhaust manifold in one case.
and rover was bad?

no
these are good engines
they do the cams because people dont do oil changes
they do the egr
but not head gaskets
if fitted with aircon the ecu can fail because fans stop working causing overheating issues ecu under bumper typical vaux poor thinking0 -
Although the head gaskets aren't amazing on these cars they are no worse than other engines. However, they are also a nightmare for condensation causing mayo oil. I have seen a few which look like definite head gasket failures but compression test fine.
Luckily it's a ten minute job to remove the rocker cover and scoop all the gunk out. Personally I don't think it's helped by the stupid service intervals VX (and all modern manufacturers) recommend, I have always changed my oil at 6k and have never had major engine trouble.0 -
all are confirmed HG failures ive come accross, one has aircon and the fan failed on that one causing it, but the rest are just your bog standard no aircon.
looking at the gaskets, all of them have poppedon or between cyl3-4 to the front of the engine. i thought about the milky condesation melarky you get with these engines, but was proven wrong.
or is the mayo causing a blockage if not oil changed in time allowing a overheat, ive pulled clumps of sludge out of the water res a few times on these possible some sludgy gunk could block a water way in the block or block up the thermostat or radiator. dunno but i'm getting concerned i usually rated the astra g over the eco tec unit recomending them to friends if they were looking at an astra/corsa.0 -
Parents 2003 Astra headgasket went at 80k as well.0
