My parents house has a horrid staircase. It is an open tread staircase with each step overhanging the one below. Going up is fine as you can put your foot on the whole tread, but coming down you've only got half a tread width for your foot to go on (as the other half is underneath the step you are already on). They've looked into alternatives and it seems that the only options are either a spiral staircase or having a right angle halfway down the stairs and with the stairs then taking up most of their relatively spacious square hallway. They don't want to do either of those things so just don't go upstairs very often! EVERY person who has ever come down the stairs has fallen at least once. With a glass door near the bottom it is very dangerous but somehow this was a legal build in the 60s.

Given most people only put each foot on every other stair, you can be more imaginative. See here:

You do raise some quite interesting & quirky points in your various posts chirp!
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I'd forgotten that chirp was the one who posted that anyone with a conservatory will get burgled. Not really an issue though if they've already fallen down their stairs and broken their neck.

Pinkteapot your comment is hilarious :)

Cattie yes my posts are a bit quirky! My mind wanders a lot and many of my posts are just for fun and not really something I am serious about.

  • I went to view a house once and took one of my sons with me. I found it extremely difficult to get up the stairs, but unfortunately my son's size 10 feet would not allow him to go up the stairs normally and he had to go up sideways. . It has never happened before so I think the stair treads were unusually narrow. There was also a kind of column 'thing' in the hall, and a very bizarre colour scheme in the bathroom. It definitely stood out but for all the wrong reasons. We didn't buy the house but I can still remember the decor after 5 years.
