Finding out who owns a website

I know sites like afternic will allow you to make offers for .com domains.. but afternic says it can't do .co.uk domains.
Why not just register your own domain? If there's a specific domain already registered that you want you could contact the owner.0 -

If it is not about to expire anytime soon then you can use http://www.sedo.co.uk
Just enter in the search box the domain name you are interested in and you will see an option: Aquire it for me.
Status: Domain is already registered.
Your options: Registered domains can sometimes be purchased from the existing owner. A Sedo broker can anonymously negotiate an acquisition on your behalf
If it is about to expire and you want to make sure you grab it before anyone else then use http://www.detagged.co.uk/
Hope that helps0 -

They have registered it, and set up one of those annoying dummy web sites that looks like it might be our company site.. but actually all the links just take you to search engine results.
I'm assuming this is their way to try and get us to pay them for the domain... but i'd rather not reward them for being sneaky if i can avoid it. I expect i'll end up having to pay them so as not to confuse out users (we have the .ac.uk domain as we are educational) ... but i thought i'd try and see if there was another way to aquire it first.
I thought it was due to expire in a few days.. but now the expiry date seems to have changed.. maybe they renewed it or somethine.
Cheers iavoucher.. i'll check those out.stay lucky!

Hi Steve
Depending on the domain name and if you are sure that the domain name was registered in bad faith you may find it cheaper to use Nominets Dispute Resolution Service, the initial cost of the complaint is zero.
Nominet will seek a response from the Registrant, after which it will initiate an informal mediation process. If a resolution cannot be achieved through mediation, the Complainant can refer the case for a decision by an independent expert on payment of a fee of £750 (plus VAT).

If you could PM me the domain name I would be in a better possition to offer advice.
Cheers

Why is this post on the "Quick grab it while you can" board? I realise this is Martin's site and he can do what he likes, though I belive one should lead by example!0
