I'll put it as brief as possible as on a phone...

Dvd recorder kept recording duffs and apparently could be a ring near the laser with dust.

Anyway advised to get a better blank media so got JVC Taiyo Yuden.

They record well but can't be played on my pc/ other dvd player even after finslising.

Is it really pot luck.as to what plays on what? Really frustrating paying £11 for 50 dvds and half are coaster whilst better ones record but only play on 1 machine. How do I know if this machine packs in that they'll ever play anywhere else?

Recordable DVDs have IMO always been a poor medium to use for anything other than very temporary storage.

Firstly they come in two formats (DVD+R and DVD-R) which in many situations are incompatible.

Then there's the fact that they are all based on dyes which are to a greater or lesser extent damaged by sunlight.

And then there's the fact that every DVD drive currently in production will be made in the Far East to an absolute minimum cost, so they will generally fail very quickly.

IMO you will be better off choosing another medium such as a USB pendrive, or a hard disk (possibly an SSD) in a caddy.

What frustrates me is that some DVD's work on some machines and not others.

I could easily record onto these DVD+R's butwould have no idea in the future if the machine I bought would play them even if it said that DVD+R's were compatible.

I'll look into the other options you suggest and may even consider DVD RW's if it works out they would be just as cheap as DVD R's with half the packet turning into coasters.

My other option is to open the machine and clean the ring of it's dust, which quite frankly fills me with dread.

Another option to DVD RW is DVD - R as they are usually more compatible with a variety of players

See if you can get one or two to try

Strangely my pc dvd drive is supposed to be able to read and write to dvd - but can only read them (firmware?)

I have some Dvd - somewhere. Kodak. I'll give them a go although DVD .+ work when tdk, Sony etc, just not these - ones so need to get hold of a small pack of - Taiyo's cheaply to test out.

    Thanks

The dvd-r won't record. They keep slipping and I have 4 more coasters.

The JVC Taiyo Yudens record perfectly but I can't play them anywhere other than the machine I recorded them on (yes they are finalised) so if this machine dies, do I lose my recordings forever or will I.be able to.find another machine that can play them and how will I know?

They don't make it easy do they and I'm wasting a small fortune finding this out.
  • Try using diffrent media player on your PC.

Open source VLC player is well known to play all formats and is a great tool that i use to troubleshoot video/audio/dvd/blueray etc files when they don't play on usual players.

    Thanks. tried vlc but nothing.

The PC drive doesn't recognise a disc is present (recognises all other Dvd + and all other discs) and other dvd players just say unknown disc.

I set dvd to finalise and when I check to see if I can finalise after burning the finalise option is not available so I assume it is already finalised as I requested before recording.

I think I've found the issue and It's easy to sort out.

The dvd is slipping but the new JVC's are not.

It appears that despite setting the dvd to finalise and the dvd telling me it has done, it hasn't. So I have to.finalise manually after recording.

No idea how long.this has been going on for, so going to have to go back through dvds to find out.

I feel a plum but now a happy plum. There are issues but I can sort some of them.

    Thanks everyone.

    Just a quick question.

Burnt DVD- only has a Video_TS folder with numerous files inside.

Burnt DVD+ has a Video_TS Folder and a Video_RM folder with far less files.

    Does this sound correct?

Just making sure everything is as it should be.

    Thanks.
