Transferring DDs back to orginal bank acc (Natwest) - but NW refuse to pay them!

I don't know if anyone can help with this, basically I transferred my DDs to a new Halifax account some time ago - I now want them to be transferred back.
They can't be reinstated as it's over 3 months so I contacted the companies involved and gave them the natwest details to change the DD mandate.
The DDs were supposed to come out at the beginning of the month but Natwest rejected them all, saying that I was unable to have the same DD as previously unless the payee reference details changed.
I then contacted the companies to ask if this was possible. They said it wasn't, but that all Natwest had to do was "unblock" the DDs.
Went back to Natwest who said they couldn't do that and that there had to be a change in payee ref!
I'm going round in circles here - has anyone else had the same problem and managed to overcome it?
thanks

What you should have done is asked Natwest to "Reinstate" your old Direct Debits then notify companies concerned you have done so.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0

They can be reinstated providing they are still listed on there online banking.
Its only once the DD is removed which is 2 years after cancellation they can not be reinstated.Im an ex employee RBS GroupHowever Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own0 -
The DDs are still listed on my online banking details - will phone Natwest again and see if they will agree to reinstate them, despite it being over 3 months...

From the Direct Debit Service Users Guide:
"Paying Bank may reinstate a cancelled Direct Debit Instruction up to two months from cancellation" and "Service User may resume direct debiting under the reinstated instruction; however a new Direct Debit Instruction must be obtained and lodged if reinstatement is identified after the two month period".
Have you cancelled the debits at the Halifax?43580
