Looking for help regarding modem internet-

I gave my sister my old PC as I bought a new laptop, Now there is a cable modem in the house, this is being used by my brothers PC. Is it possible to get some gadget that will allow my brother and sister to use the same modem for internet access.

I know she could buy a wireles router- But buying this plus a wireless stick would cost in excess of £50. I was wondering if there was a cheaper option.

If its any helps there isp is Virgin Media at a speed of 10meg

Thanks for your help

the only other option is a LAN (CAT5) cable and a router or internet connection sharing via a crossover CAT5 cable , but this requires 2 network cards in the PC connected to the cable modem (unless you connect that Pc via USB)

The cable modem will either have a USB or (more likely) an Ethernet (network cable or CAT5) connection to the existing PC.

If it has a USB connection then you will need a network card in each of the PC's, a network cable (crossover CAT5) between the two and set up "Internet Connection Sharing" on the PC connected to the modem.

If there is a network cable between the modem and the PC the solution suggested by Browntoa is to add another network card in that PC and connect it using the crossover CAT5 cable to the 2nd PC, and set up "Internet Connection Sharing".

The alternative is to use a router connected to the modem and run Cat5 cables from it to the 2 PCs.

just get a router and two long RJ45 cables and plug them in, I have the bt home hub, with two RJ45 cables one pc in one corner the other pc in the other corner and the tv with sky+ in the middle of the window, and they work fine, also my son has his xbox360 wireless upstairs the RJ45 cables are about £2.50 on

which is where I got mine from, one came with bt home hub, so thats cheap enough.

as long as the pc's have an RJ45 socket at the back locks like a big phone socket, you shouldn't need any network cards.

You could buy a wireless router now, and use it with a wired connection to the second PC. Then in the future buy a wireless network card of one or both of the machines. That would be relatively cheap now and give you more options in the future.

If you look at https://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk their cheapest non-wireless router is £25, there cheapest wireless router is £30 so going for a wireless router now is not an overly expensive option.

BTW if you're on cable, if you get a router make sure you get a suitbale DSL or Cable router NOT an ADSL router.
