Backing up files onto drop box

Hi wonder if anyone could give me some advice as I am being a complete IT ludite with dropbox and can't work out how to use it!
I've googled loads to get answers but have ended up more confused than I started! I've also gone through help on dropbox.
I have tried to back up my files which inc my docs, music, photos, videos all in folders by dragging and dropping into the dropbox folders. I changed the dropbox folders slightly by creating a new music folder and one for videos. However, after I had dragged and dropped I went to the dropbox web site and the only thing in the folders were shortcuts to my own folders, not the actual files.
I can work out how to upload from the dropbox web site but what I am doing wrong with drag and drop? I also tried copy and paste but in my music folder the only things that copied were the jpg files with the album covers - none of the MP3 files copied over.
I apreciate this is a long explanation and may not be very clear but any help would be greatly apreciated.

when you 'drag and drop' try using the right mouse button - you'll get a menu, then select 'copy'
It does sound like it's more a windows problem than a dropbox one0
